Turning a Turkish search phrase into a domain, with its ğ and ı intact, is tempting: an address like günlükkiralık.com is exactly the phrase people type. But does it work technically, does it help in search, and will it cause trouble with email? Here are the pros and cons, plainly.
What is an IDN and how does it work?
An IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) contains letters outside ASCII. DNS does not understand those letters directly; the browser quietly converts the address to its ASCII form, called punycode.
| What you type | What DNS sees |
|---|---|
| günlükkiralık.com | xn–gnlkkiralk-9dbc90e.com |
Both are one and the same domain. The browser shows the Turkish form in the address bar; the xn-- form can show up when you paste a link somewhere or in some email and messaging apps.

Advantages
- Spelled like the search phrase. People think “günlük kiralık” and the address reads that way, which makes it easier to remember and say aloud.
- Correct Turkish.
gunlukkiralik.comis readable but looks like a typo; the accented version spells the brand properly. - Stands out. Few domains use Turkish characters, so a well-chosen one is memorable.
- Subdomains work too.
bodrum.günlükkiralık.comopens under the same rules.
Disadvantages and things to watch
- It can look ugly when shared. Some apps show the link as punycode. Register the ASCII version and redirect it, and share short, clean links.
- Email support is uneven. The domain part of an address such as
info@günlükkiralık.comis usually fine, but non-ASCII characters in the mailbox name (before the@) are still not widely supported. Keep mailbox names ASCII (info@,booking@) and use Turkish characters only in the domain. Send yourself a test message first. - Older software and forms. Some old form, CRM or payment scripts fail to validate IDNs. Test forms, email notifications and SSL end to end before launch.
- Typing mistakes. Some visitors will type
gunlukkiralik.com. Registering it and 301-redirecting to the main domain is the cheapest way not to lose that traffic. - Look-alike letters. Homograph domains can imitate an address using similar letters from other alphabets. It does not harm your own name, but it is worth monitoring as your brand grows.
Effect on SEO
Google crawls and indexes IDN addresses without trouble; Turkish characters are not an obstacle to ranking. Do not assume the keyword in the domain ranks the site on its own either: search engines look at content, links and user behavior far more than the address.
The real benefit is indirect. A clickable, trustworthy, memorable name lifts branded search and direct visits, and reads naturally as anchor text and in ads. The name is a good start; it does not do the work itself. For the ranking side, see our local SEO and Google Business Profile guide.
Why it appeals in short-term rentals
In daily rentals of flats, villas, aparthotels, boats and cars, visitors have usually already decided, and the search phrase is clear and common. A domain where the searched phrase is the brand suits:
- a marketplace where owners list their places,
- a booking site for pool villas and holiday homes (see common mistakes when building a villa rental site),
- a direct-booking site that brings several properties under one brand,
- city subdomains (
bodrum.,fethiye.,antalya.) for local search pages, - an extra domain 301-redirected to an existing brand.
For the technical side of such projects, see our villa rental software and villa rental sector page.
Checklist before you decide
- Did you also register the ASCII version (
gunlukkiralik.com) and 301 it to the main address? - Does the SSL certificate work for the IDN (both Turkish and punycode forms)?
- Have the contact form, notification emails and payment page been tested from the IDN address?
- Are mailbox names ASCII, and did a test message arrive?
- Is the address easy to read on business cards, ads and social profiles?
- Are both the main and redirected addresses added in Search Console?
